Bent backs Agbonlahor to fill Rooney’s England shoes

Darren Bent has tipped his strike partner and fellow England international Gabriel Agbonlahor for a key role under Fabio Capello after a superb performance for Aston Villa against Norwich City.

The 25 year-old pushed his CV under the England manager’s nose by scoring a goal and claiming two assists, as well as demonstrating his excellent work-rate and pace in a thrilling match.

Villa manager Alex McLeish confirmed after the game that Agbonlahor had been named in the provisional squad for the friendlies against Spain and Sweden.

He said a pairing of Agbonlahor and Bent for England would be “attractive” and described the Birmingham-born forward as a “character”.

“It is great to see him developing like that and if he can get in the England squad it is even better for his confidence – Gabby should be thrilled by his performance,” McLeish said.
